Jungle Magnolia Month 6 Started

 Hi all -

I hope everyone is doing well! It's hard to believe that we're getting close to the end of summer! It was really hot last week, but we've just had a cool, rainy weekend. It looks like the rain will continue into this next week. We always love rain, especially when it's not accompanied by lightning!! Football season is also upon us. We just had our last preseason game and the Denver Broncos are looking pretty good. Hopefully this will continue into the games that count!

On Saturday I received my monthly fabric packet for the Jungle Magnolia BOM designed by Judy Niemeyer. This is the final fabric packet! I was going to put it aside since I'm driving to Kansas City to visit family tomorrow, but I just couldn't wait! I had already done all of the preparation work that I could with the pattern pieces, so I was able to start with the fabric cutting. It's definitely nice to be able to dig right in like that! I was able to get all of the fabric cut and started on piecing the units. Here's what I have so far:

Jungle Magnolia - A1 Units

Jungle Magnolia - A2 Units

Jungle Magnolia - A3 Units

Jungle Magnolia - A4 Units

I have to take a lot more care with the paper piecing this month because the pieces are long and skinny and extend past the ends of the sewing line in both directions. As Judy suggests, I have drawn lines in pencil on the backs of the papers showing the area that each fabric piece must cover, including seam allowances. This lets me see immediately after sewing that the fabric does indeed cover all of the area that it needs to cover. Here's a preview of where we're headed with this month's units:

Once these units are finished, I'll be able to attach them to the previous month's units and finish this quilt top. I'm really excited to see the final product! One important thing I need to start thinking about is the binding. The binding fabric was not included with the kit, so I have to start looking at the quilt top and decide what fabric I want to use for the binding and get it ordered. These fabrics are supposed to be available for another two years, but it's certainly safest to get this decided and in hand!

I was also able to finish sewing dow the applique pieces on my Spring Baby Quilt designed by Pat Bravo.

It doesn't look much different from last week, but I really did do the work! I still need to make the backing and then can start quilting. My niece commented before that she really likes my pieced backings, so I will definitely piece this one. I have four of the petal stabilizers and a bunch of circle stabilizers left from the cuttings for the front, so I'll put some of these appliques on the back, too. For teh quilting, I'm thinking about dividing the background into random polygons and quilting different background motifs in each area.

Finally, I continued to work on my Scarfscape designed by Laura Nelkin.

I finished the bias band on the top, picked up the stitches along the long edge and have started the lace border. It's really fun watching the yarn slowly shift colors! This yarn is also really soft and feels so good on my hands as I knit. I'm really enjoying this project!
